The links on this page are some of those that I found helpful when I was managing Susie's diabetes, particularly in the early days.  Several years have passed since then and there may be many more useful sites, so I also recommend trying some of the major search engines using key words or phrases.  I no longer regularly maintain the links on this page, but I do occasionally check them all and update or remove any that are not working.  They were last checked in full in March/April 2008.

Even though I am in the UK, many of the links are to USA websites. This is simply because when I was first putting this page together, the majority of informative websites about diabetes in cats were based there.  As a result, you might see a mixture of different spellings on this page.  I have used American English where it is part of the name of an organisation in the US.  All other spellings are in British English.

Principal Feline Diabetes Sites

These are complete extensive sites that provide comprehensive coverage of feline or pet diabetes.

www.sugarpet.net  - Very extensive UK based site from Deborah dedicated to her two "sugar pet" diabetic cats, Paris and Tokyo (Tatty), packed with practical information and tips, particularly about home blood glucose testing, and an extensive links page with many links different to those that you'll find here.  There are pages with graphs of BG curves from Paris and Tatty, and a page with some excellent photos of how to inject a cat, featuring Tatty.

felinediabetes.com - Feline Diabetes.  Excellent comprehensive site dedicated solely to diabetes in cats, with many pages, a good introduction, techniques and tips and the renowned Feline Diabetes Message Board.

www.petdiabetes.org - Pets With Diabetes.  Another excellent and comprehensive site covering diabetes in cats, dogs and other companion animals.  A wealth of information from the more basic aspects to some very specific areas, divided into manageable sections such as education, resources, techniques.

www.caninsulin.co.uk (for vets in UK),  www.caninsulin.com (for vets outside of UK),   www.cat-dog-diabetes.com (for pet owners) and www.pet-diabetes.com (takes you to cat-dog-diabetes.com) - Slightly different versions of the Caninsulin website from manufacturers Intervet.  Caninsulin is the U-40 insulin that I used for Susie's diabetes since 1999.  This family of websites contains a wealth of information about diagnosing and managing diabetes including a video of injecting a cat, typical blood glucose curves and those for common complications, management of diabetic cats and dogs at all stages, and of course information about Caninsulin itself.  The veterinary sites have a more technical slant, but I still found them very informative.  There are also different sets of FAQs targeted at vets and pet owners.

Click here to visit the Muffin support group for diabetic pets and their owners
www.petdiabetes.net - As well as a lot of practical advice and support on the site, this is the home of the Muffin e-mail Support Group for owners of diabetic pets, founded in 1997.  The group is owned and run by Susan and is based in Canada.  Muffin was Susan's diabetic dog.  I joined the group in February 2000 and was a member until 2006.  It's an excellent way of keeping in touch and sharing advice and experience with other owners of diabetic pets all over the world.

www.petdiabetes.com - Another comprehensive support site, owned by Judy, who I think is based in Canada.  Dedicated to Judy's diabetic dog. Again, a wealth of information, links and profiles, and another e-mail support group for owners of diabetic cats and dogs.  An example of one of the pages is www.petdiabetes.com/brenda.htm - reasons why BG might remain high in diabetic cats and dogs.

Other Major Feline Diabetes or Animal Diabetes Pages

These links may be to sites dedicated to diabetes in cats, to sections within websites or to particularly informative single pages. They provide detailed accounts of feline diabetes.

www.sugarcats.com - Sugar Cats.  A fun site dedicated mainly to feline diabetes where you can register yourself or your cat as a special agent!  Not just humour, also has a lot of useful info, e.g. about insulin and fructosamine within the infirmary section.

www.sugarcats.net/sites/harry/bgtest.htm - How to Test Your Pet's Blood Glucose at Home (starring Harry) by Nancy Johnson.  A series of excellent pages on home BG testing, including pages on ear prick testing for cats, lip prick testing for dogs, interpreting BG results and urine testing.  Harry was a diabetic cat who sadly passed away at the end of 1999.  Essential reading if you are thinking of testing your pet's BG at home!

www.vetmed.auburn.edu/sac/mededu/diabetes/home.html - Several pages of useful information focusing mainly on insulin and injections, from the Client Education Series of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.  Two particularly useful pages within this section are www.vetmed.auburn.edu/sac/mededu/diabetes/administer.html with advice and pictures about administering insulin by injection, and www.vetmed.auburn.edu/sac/mededu/diabetes/somogyi.html which has information about the Somogyi rebound and examples of  BG curves.

Click for the PetEducation.com website www.PetEducation.com - Provided by Doctors Foster and Smith in the USA with contributions from many other experts. Click on the button on the left for their main index page for access to their whole site - a superb, easy to navigate, extensive collection of pages about pet care and pet health. Diabetes in dogs and many other aspects of pet health are also covered.

These links are generally to single pages on more broadly based websites that provide a useful overview of feline diabetes in some detail.

A single long page (9 sides of A4 to print) about diabetes in dogs and cats with a lot of basic information covering topics such as types of diabetes, diagnosis, insulin therapy, home care, monitoring and more, but not home BG testing.

www.netpets.org/cats/healthspa/diabetes.html - Net Pets. An article called "Living with Feline Diabetes" by Marcia King.

www.cvah.com/article/DMincats.html - Centennial Valley Animal Hospital, Colorado, USA. An article by Dr Rebecca Hover that was an earlier "article of the month" and is now in their previous months’ archives section. Good, no nonsense introduction to feline diabetes in plain language.

www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/diabetes.html  - a page about feline diabetes within the the Feline Health Center from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc with a link to an excellent series of videos about understanding and managing diabetes in cats.  When I checked in April 2008, the link wasn't straightforward - you had to click on the "For Pet Owners" tab then "Cats" and select the "Caring for you Diabetic Cat" video series, but once you're there, the videos are well worth it.

www.bestfriends.org/members/health/feldiabetes.htm - good basic intro from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, USA in an article called "Diabetes in Cats" by Dr Margaret Muns.

www.kitsandcards.co.uk/Inka/index.php - Inka suffered from a very rare complication of diabetes, non-ketotic hyperosmolar syndrome.  This is Romayne's site about her 4 year long experience of managing Inka's life threatening condition.
